Can a Download Really Help Change Behaviour?

Can a Download Really Help Change Behaviour?

It sounds like a reasonable question.

You download an audio file. You put your headphones on. You listen for an hour. And somewhere in that process, you expect something to change.

But can a download really help change behaviour?

I think it can. But probably not in the way people imagine.

A hypnosis recording cannot force somebody to stop smoking, stop drinking, change their relationship with food, or suddenly become a different person. The change still belongs to the person listening.

What a good session can do is create the conditions in which that change becomes more possible.

I think of it as a breeding ground for change.

The first job is not the suggestion

When I started developing EnTrance, I became increasingly convinced that the most important part of a session happens before the specific therapeutic material has even had a chance to do its work.

It is relaxation.

If somebody cannot get away from the noise in their own head, the cleverest script in the world is not going to achieve very much.

Imagine a radio playing static in the corner of the room. You can still hear the television. You can still have a conversation. But the static is interfering with everything. It masks things. It makes concentration harder.

Then somebody switches the radio off.

Suddenly you can hear.

That is what deep relaxation can feel like.

For somebody living with constant stress, anxiety, compulsive behaviour or a mind that simply will not stop racing, that reduction in internal noise can be significant in itself.

The suggestions, metaphors and post-hypnotic material then become a secondary event. They have something to work with.

We are not simply giving the mind more information

This is where hypnosis becomes different from being told what you ought to do.

Most people already know.

The smoker knows smoking is bad for them. The person drinking too much knows it is causing problems. Someone caught in destructive behaviour usually does not need another lecture explaining the consequences.

Knowledge is rarely the missing piece.

The problem can be what happens between knowing something and being able to act on it.

This is where I believe hypnosis can be useful.

When somebody enters a deeply relaxed state, the normal critical, analytical part of the mind can become less dominant. Instead of simply presenting a list of instructions, a hypnosis session can use imagery, suggestion and metaphor to introduce ideas in a different way.

The aim is not to batter the conscious mind into submission.

It is to lower some of the resistance.

I learned something about this personally. When I first discovered hypnosis, I was not an especially trusting or relaxed listener. My mind was paranoid, tense and constantly checking what was happening.

Confusion techniques and what I would describe as paraliminal approaches were particularly powerful for me because they gave my conscious mind something else to occupy itself with. While one part of my attention was trying to work out what was happening, another part could begin to let go.

That experience stayed with me when I began making EnTrance.

Not everybody needs that approach. But it taught me something important: sometimes the obstacle to relaxation is the mind's determination to remain in control.

Change often begins before the behaviour changes

There is another reason I think a download can help invoke change.

When someone is deep inside a destructive pattern, their attention can become incredibly short-term.

Get through today.

Get through tonight.

Deal with tomorrow when it arrives.

If you cannot imagine a future that is different from the present, it becomes very difficult to make decisions on behalf of that future.

This is why I keep coming back to the image of a pinprick of light through a blind.

The problem has not disappeared. Nothing magical has happened. But suddenly there is an indication that darkness is not necessarily all there is.

That possibility is huge.

Once you can imagine that things could be different, your decisions can begin to change.

The whole structure of your life can eventually change.

But the recording has not done that to you.

It has helped create a moment in which something different can become imaginable.

The download cannot manufacture willingness

There is an important qualification here.

A hypnosis recording cannot manufacture a desire to change.

If someone is perfectly happy with their behaviour and sees no reason to do anything differently, pressing play is unlikely to solve that problem.

At some point, there has to be a willingness to move.

For me, change happened when I was in the eye of the storm. I had reached the point where I genuinely wanted something different.

The hypnosis recording I listened to did not single-handedly turn my life around. I would never claim that.

But it triggered something.

It allowed me to switch off. It bypassed some of the noise and the inner critic. It gave me facts and ideas that I could actually receive.

And indirectly, that became part of a much larger change.

That distinction matters.

The recording can contribute to the process. It cannot live your life for you.

Sometimes the most important thing is simply learning to relax

This is one of the reasons I do not think an EnTrance session should be judged solely by whether somebody experiences an immediate behavioural transformation.

If you buy a smoking session, obviously stopping smoking is the reason you bought it.

But you may also discover something else.

You may discover what it feels like when your mind finally becomes quiet.

You may realise that you have not properly relaxed for years.

You may experience a period in which the constant internal noise drops away and you can actually hear your own thoughts without them fighting each other.

You may wake from the session feeling unusually clear and focused.

That experience can become important in its own right.

And repeated experience of that state may give someone another option besides the old behaviour they have been using to cope.

There is nothing mystical about it

I am deliberately wary of giving hypnosis mystical or magical connotations.

Change is not something being magically inserted into somebody's mind.

If anything, I think the process is more reductive than additive.

You take things away.

You reduce the noise.

You reduce the internal conflict.

You reduce some of the pressure surrounding the behaviour.

You allow someone to see what is actually happening.

And from there, they may begin to renegotiate it.

Sometimes the experience can nevertheless feel extraordinary. You can come out of a deep trance with your mind feeling exceptionally clear and focused, almost as though you have woken up with the freshness of being ten years old again.

Something can feel magical without requiring a magical explanation.

So, can a download really help?

Yes.

But indirectly.

A download can help create relaxation. Relaxation can reduce interference. Reduced interference can allow different ideas, images and possibilities to be considered. Those possibilities can produce an emotional shift. And that shift can ultimately influence behaviour.

There are no guarantees in that sequence.

The listener remains the person who changes.

The recording is not the change. It is part of the environment in which change can begin.

That is what I mean when I say an EnTrance session can be a breeding ground for change.

It does not force anything.

It gives change somewhere to start.
